Home of "the Brawny Beetle"

The what?!? I've got to admit the nickname was news to me. It's not a name we use for the engine, to the Mt Rainier Scenic crews she's known simply as "the 17", or as "HLC 17" if you're talking on the radio.

However, the folks at Trains Magazine are apparently bit more creative than we are, and they have nicknamed #17 "the Brawny Beetle" in the May 2007 issue of Trains Magazine.

"Extreme Steam - 7 locomotive you've gotta see!"

Trains Magazine, May 2007

"From the oldest to the most high-tech, you can't miss riding behind these seven locomotives!" The article goes on to list 7 steam locomotives that the editors of Trains Magazine feel are worthy of a visit by railfans from around the country. The engines are included for various reasons, but all of them stand out from the crowd for one reason or another.

#17 is included on the list for her rugged good looks, and most of all pulling power that you wouldn't expect from such a compact engine. With small drivers and lots of weight, she can pull with the best of them.

The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad is honored to have #17 included in this list of outstanding locomotives. We agree that she's a special engine, and that she is a great pulling locomotive. While the engineers have a lot of different favorites, #17 is one of the few engines that just about everyone agrees is a great locomotive.

By the way, for those of you who like to nitpick, some folks will say that only the 2-10-2T's were actually called Minarets. However these 2-8-2T's bear a very strong resemblance to the 2-10-2's, and are often call "Minaret-Style" or simply "Minarets"

Thanks again to the editors of Trains Magazine for naming #17 as one of the "Must See" locomotives. We encourage folks to come out and take a ride behind #17 this summer. She's one of our main locomotives, so your chances of riding behind her are pretty good.

As for whether or not we'll start calling her "the brawny beetle"? I'll get back to you on that...
