Excursion Trains
The excursion train travels to the large trestle at MP 59, near Divide, WA, for an 18 mile trip lasting 2 to 2-1/2 hours. Trains depart from our Mineral, WA restoration facility, and are powered by one of our steam locomotives unless otherwise noted on the schedule page.
During the ride you'll travel through forests and past the town of Mineral. You'll also cross several small trestles over mountain streams. On the afternoon run you'll also cross a large timber trestle. At Divide you'll have a view of Storm King Mountain. Steep grades mean you'll get the chance to see the steam locomotive working hard. Mt Rainier Scenic RR's 2-8-2T #17 was featured in Trains Magazine's article "Extreme Steam - 7 locomotives you've gotta see" in the May 2007 issue. She's also got a new nickname. (more)
Our train now departs from Mineral, WA!
In November 2006 the Mt Rainier area was hit with record rainfall and massive flooding. You may have seen the damage to Mt Rainier National Park on the news. The Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad also suffered flood damage, and our Elbe to Mineral line was cut in two.
Due to that section of the line being out of service until repairs are completed, there are many signification changes for 2007. We'll be operating from a new location, running on a new route and with a new schedule. Just about the only thing that hasn't changed is that we still provide a ride through the forest on a historic passenger train pulled by a vintage locomotive!
Please see the articles below for more information on the changes for 2007.
